Commander Gilbert E. Schmidt (1924-2002) 13 June 1970 through 4 May 1971


Commander Gilbert E. Schmidt was born in Oakland, California in September 1924. After attending high school in Patterson, California and Modesto Junior College, Modesto, California, CDR Schmidt enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in January 1943. During World War Two CDR Schmidt served in the Pacific with the Naval Air Transport Service. In 1953 he was advanced to Chief Aviation Machinist Mate and participated in an operational evaluation of land- based airborne early warning systems in Korea. Subsequently he was ordered to Officer Candidate School and commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1954.


CDR Schmidt has served sea tours as a gunnery division officer in USS ROCHESTER (CA 124), operations officer USS COGSWELL (DD 651), operations officer for Commander Destroyer Division 212, operations officer USS LYNDE MCCORMICK (DDG 8), and commanding officer USS GALLANT (MSO 489). His shore assignments have included duty on the staff of Commander FIRST Fleet, the command and staff course at the Naval War College, and duty in the Strategic Plans and Policy Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Prior to assuming command of GOLDSBOROUGH, CDR Schmidt was Commander of Mine Division SEVENTY-TWO.
